what is a green burial?

Green burial emphasizes simplicity and environmental sustainability. The body is buried in a simple biodegradable casket or burial shroud, eliminating the use of embalming fluids, concrete vaults or metal caskets, allowing for complete decomposition of the body and return to the earth. There are three standards of Green Burial:

  1. No Embalming - The chemicals used in embalming in the US are poisonous to the embalmers and to the earth. A known carcinogen, formaldehyde does not stop the decay of the body.

  2. No Burial Vaults - Metal, concrete or plastic burial vaults are required by some landscape-style cemeteries to reduce ground settling and to facilitate lawn mowing.

  3. No Impervious Burial Containers - No matter how much they cost, metal caskets will not stop bodily decay. Green Burial Project 501(c)3
