SANCTUARY BURROW

at the

The Road to Death Faire
The journey begins before the Faire...
Before the stages come alive, the tents rise beneath the trees, and the community altar takes shape, the spirit of Death Faire is already stirring.
The Road to Death Faire is a series of gatherings that invite us to slow down, lean in, and begin the journey together.
Along the way, you'll find workshops, song circles, films, art, and moments of quiet reflection—each one an invitation to explore, connect, and wonder.
Come to one gathering or wander through them all. Follow your curiosity, meet kindred spirits, and discover that sometimes the journey itself is part of the destination.
We look forward to meeting you along the road.

Changing the
Story of Death
documentary film premiere

Monday, October 26
7:00 p.m (Doors open at 6:30)
620 Market St, Chapel Hill, NC
CMCK.Media presents Changing the Story of Death in association with heart2heartnc, Sanctuary at the Burrow, and Fenwick Foundation.
This powerful feature documentary film by Carey McKelvey premieres Monday, October 26. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the film begins at 7:00 p.m.
After her son’s tragic overdose, a grief-stricken mother in conservative, rural North Carolina transforms her unimaginable loss into an annual Death Faire, a gathering where the community comes together to confront death, process grief, and celebrate life.
In another small Southern town, a woman with terminal cancer prepares for her own death on her own terms—with courage, humor, and intention. Surrounded by friends, family, healers, a death doula, musicians, and community, both women make the same choice: they embrace death as a profound invitation to love more deeply, grieve more openly, and live more fully
Carey McKelvey, founder of CMCK.Media and resident creative wiz has been making films and videos for more than a decade. Using his vast knowledge of video production and post-production, Carey has been awarded multiple Telly Awards, been featured in film festivals nationally and internationally, and created hundreds of videos for small businesses and major commercial brands.

Grief, Love & Joy
Singing from the Heart
with Kathleen Hannan

As a special event leading up to the 11th Annual Death Faire on November 7, heart2heartnc is delighted to welcome Kathleen Hannan for a moving and uplifting song circle rooted in community, embodiment, and the wisdom of the heart.
Kathleen is the founder and director of the Bodies, Voices & Spirit Community Chorus in the NC Triangle. She is an Alexander Technique teacher, a North Carolina Arts Council Songwriter Fellowship recipient, a certified Dances of Universal Peace leader, and a lifelong student of the Heart. For more than 60 years, Kathleen has been writing, collecting, and sharing beautiful songs that invite connection, healing, and joy among people of all ages.
In this two-hour workshop, participants will learn simple, heart-opening songs and circle dances that celebrate our love of and kinship with the natural world while making space for grief—honoring loss, tenderness, remembrance, and the many emotions that arise around death and transition. The dances are simple circle dances with song, many drawn from the Dances of Universal Peace repertoire. Some people dance on their feet, and some dance from their chairs—whatever your body wants to do is welcome.
Kathleen’s teaching style integrates music, movement, embodiment, and the whole body as a vessel for carrying the voice forward.
Together, we will meet ourselves right where we are, explore the true nature we share with all beings, and experience the joy, comfort, and beauty of singing in community. Workshop notes, lyrics, and links to recordings of the songs will be sent to participants after class.
The cost to attend this event is $25, and registration is required. Please pay online or at the door. If you need financial support to attend this workshop, please make that request by emailing listeningtoyoursoul@gmail.com before registering.

Relaxing into the
In-Between:
A Yin Yoga Practice

In Tibetan, Bardo means "gap" or "intermediate state”. While most famously known as the transitional state of consciousness between death and rebirth, it broadly describes any in-between moment or phase where one condition has ended and a new one has not yet formed. Transitions occur continuously in our lives, sometimes generating excitement and often uncertainty, anxiety, and grief. In this Yin Yoga practice, we will explore the Bardo of this life by accessing the pauses between breaths, thoughts, and actions through gentle yoga asana, breathing practices, and meditation. Together, we will relax into the bardo with curiosity, allowing us to examine our relationship to uncertainty with confidence and ease.
Susan Friedman's yoga began twenty years ago, a search for relief from pain and overwork. In the quiet on the mat, she discovered that the breath eases the gap between discomfort and ease. In
addition to teaching yoga, she is a social worker dedicated to community care. In her classes,
she facilitates spaces where the heart can rest and the spirit can reflect. Her approach is
trauma-informed and deeply rooted in empathy, weaving together the wisdom of yoga,
meditation, and Tai Chi to foster emotional resilience and collective healing.
She is a 500-hour Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher and a certified Tai Chi Practice Leader.
This event is offered by donation. Please register here so we know how many participants are coming.

Project Name

In a world that often asks us to carry grief, uncertainty, and change alone, we gather to remember that healing happens in community.
Through the gentle weaving of restorative music, meditation, healing touch, gentle movement, and guided breathwork, we'll create a space to reconnect—with ourselves, with one another, and with the resilient heart of our community.
Together, we'll honor what we've carried, celebrate what sustains us, and discover the quiet strength that emerges when hearts gather with openness, compassion, and care.
Join facilitator Cathy Brooksie Edwards, musicians Amy Durso, Lolly Dunlap, Sheila Fleming, and special musical guests Richard Edwards and Will Ridenour as they weave together music, touch, silence, and shared intention into a circle of renewal—reminding us that healing is a gift we both receive and offer in community.
What to bring
Please bring your own yoga mat, water, blanket, and any props that support your comfort as you relax into the stillness of your tender heart. Chairs will be available. Feel free to arrive several minutes early to prepare your spot and settle into your sacred space for participation.
